Four hundred feet beneath the eastern edge of Chrysalis City—directly below the Outer Storage Facility in Dawn Town—lies Facility 59, an installation built by Terra’s previous civilisation. The facility is one of multiple Sarcophagus sites buried across the island, each containing ancient medical preservation devices powered by energy sources that dwarf anything the current civilisation can produce. One Sarcophagus could power Chrysalis City for a thousand years.
Chrysalis Labs discovered Facility 59 during a routine geological survey eight years ago. The Scientific Investigation Section conducted the initial exploration; the Defense Section immediately classified the findings. A small team has been working below the city ever since, studying the installation’s technology and attempting to reactivate its systems without triggering whatever safety mechanisms the original builders installed.
The Outer Storage Facility was constructed as a cover—a repurposed power station now officially used for archival storage. Its actual function is to control access to the facility below. The geometric portal system within connects to the Highland Plateau, where another installation from the old civilisation stands. The hidden library’s self-shuffling books contain fragments of the previous civilisation’s knowledge, accessible only to those the ancient systems recognise.
This work is known to perhaps two dozen people in Chrysalis—senior Labs leadership, select Defense Section personnel, and the researchers working directly on the project. The rest of the city, including most of the Labs’ own staff, have no idea what lies beneath their feet.
The Oligarchy knows. Dragon Logistics discovered Facility 28 beneath Malachite two thousand feet down. Rhine Lab built its headquarters directly above Facility 31. Malachite Forges has been involved in excavating multiple sites. The factions are in a quiet race to understand and control the old civilisation’s technology before their rivals do.
The question of what this technology was designed to preserve—and what catastrophe the previous civilisation was fleeing—has not been answered.
