Themes for Chrysalis Adventures

Progress and Its Price: Chrysalis represents humanity’s ambition to understand and control nature through technology. Originium offers unprecedented advancement but carries catastrophic cost. The city must grapple with whether to continue forward, pull back, or find a third path that acknowledges both potential and peril.

Institutional vs. Individual: The Labs, the University, the factions—all operate according to institutional logic that prioritizes research, control, and long-term goals over individual lives. Characters must navigate a city where people are sometimes treated as data points, and decide whether to work within the system or challenge it.

Secrets and Knowledge: Chrysalis is built on concealed information. The Labs suppresses oripathy data. The election campaigns hide their true backers. The ancient facility below the city contains knowledge from a dead civilization. What you know determines what power you hold—and what you do with that knowledge determines who you become.

The Weight of Elections: The mayoral election is not simply a political event—it will determine Chrysalis’s philosophical direction for years to come. Will the city double down on technological dominance (Elis), retreat toward environmental preservation (Grothor), or attempt radical redistribution of power (Leonore)? Each path has consequences that extend far beyond Chrysalis’s walls.

Ancient Technology and Modern Hubris: The previous civilization built Sarcophagus facilities, geometric portals, and other marvels that current Terra can barely comprehend. Yet they failed—their people died in those preservation chambers, waiting for a future that never came. Chrysalis’s factions are racing to control technology they don’t fully understand, repeating patterns that ended in extinction once before.

Key NPCs and Their True Motivations

Elis Kulf wants technological supremacy and genuinely believes the Labs can solve oripathy—but is willing to sacrifice individuals for institutional progress. The sublevel experiments and Dawn Town worker exploitation are, to her, acceptable costs for breakthrough research. She’s not malicious; She’s consequentialist to a dangerous degree.

Grothor Morain speaks for farmers and environmental preservation, but Dragon Logistics is actively mapping the underdark for RALA and involved in the Horizon Arc Project. Grothor may not know the full extent of what his organisation is doing, or he knows and has calculated that controlling ancient technology is worth temporary alliances with questionable actors.

Leonore of Alyss genuinely wants to help the underclass and believes in her platform of redistribution and integration—but the Al’ar are using her as a figurehead to gain surface-world legitimacy. She may not realize she’s being manipulated, or she knows and has decided that achieving power through compromise is better than having no power at all.

Kristen Wright co-founded Rhine Lab to pursue scientific advancement without institutional constraints. Her collaboration with the Al’ar on the Horizon Arc Project is driven by ambition to “conquer the sky” and break whatever barrier confines Terra. She doesn’t see herself as building a weapon—she sees herself as liberating her world from an ancient prison.

Saria the Vouivre genuinely wants to limit originium’s spread and find safe treatments for oripathy. Her partnership with Kristen has become strained as Rhine Lab’s priorities shift toward the Horizon Arc. She’s caught between loyalty to her co-founder and concern that Kristen’s ambitions have become reckless.

The Al’ar Family views surface dwellers as temporary obstacles to long-term control. Their mapping of the underdark, their backing of Leonore, their alliance with Kristen—everything is calculated toward establishing drow dominance when the current order collapses. They believe the oripathy crisis will destabilize surface civilization, creating opportunities for those prepared to act.

Facility 59 and the Portal Network

The ancient civilization built interconnected installations across Terra:

  • Sarcophagus Facilities (numbered 28-59): Medical preservation chambers for people fleeing some catastrophe
  • Geometric Portals: Transportation network linking significant locations
  • Guardian Constructs: Silver men left to protect portal sites and test those who approach

The civilization failed. Their Sarcophagus malfunctioned, killing those who trusted the technology to save them. The portals remain functional because they’re purely mechanical—no biological components to corrupt.

What the Factions Know:

  • Dragon Logistics discovered Facility 28 (2000ft beneath Malachite)
  • Rhine Lab built over Facility 31 (800ft deep)
  • Chrysalis Labs controls Facility 59 (400ft beneath Dawn Town)
  • Facility 37 remains undiscovered

What They Don’t Know:
The previous civilization wasn’t fleeing war or natural disaster—they were fleeing originium’s uncontrolled growth. The crystals weren’t just an energy source they misused; they were the catastrophe itself. By mining originium extensively, current Terra is recreating the conditions that destroyed its predecessors.

The Horizon Arc Project

Multiple factions: Malachite forges, Rhine Lab, the Al’ar, and Dragon Logistics are helping Kristen Wright constructing a weapon/launch platform. The official name is the Pioneer Project—a vessel to “conquer the sky.” The actual goal is more complex:

Kristen Wright believes Terra is enclosed by an ancient barrier—something built by whoever came before the previous civilization. She wants to break through it, reach whatever lies beyond, and prove that Terra’s people can transcend their island prison.

The Al’ar view the project as a potential superweapon—orbital strike capability or the means to destroy surface infrastructure if their takeover meets resistance.

Dragon Logistics (specifically Grothor) may see it as leverage—whoever controls orbital capability controls trade, transportation, and military superiority across Terra.

The silver man guarding the nearby portal has observed the construction but taken no action—yet. The ancient systems recognize that current Terra’s technology is primitive compared to what the portals were built alongside. The silver man flexes and waits, testing those who approach, determining if anyone is worthy of the knowledge the portals can provide.

Running the Election

The election occurs on Rhaan 9th—three weeks from whenever characters arrive in Chrysalis. This timeline creates natural urgency:

Week 1: Campaigns are in full swing. Characters can work for any faction, observe debates, and gather information. The city feels tense but functional.

Week 2: Incidents escalate. Another public oripathy death, campaign workers roughed up, rumors of vote-buying and intimidation. The militia presence increases. Something happens that forces characters to choose sides or take independent action.

Week 3: The final push. Each campaign makes its last appeal. Secret information comes to light—about the Labs’ experiments, Dragon Logistics’ underground mapping, Leonore’s Al’ar backing, or the Horizon Arc Project. Characters must decide what to reveal, what to suppress, and who to support.

Election Day: The vote happens. The outcome depends partly on character actions—who did they work for, what information did they expose, which factions did they help or hinder. The new mayor takes office immediately. Chrysalis’s future direction is set.

Aftermath: The losing campaigns don’t simply disappear. Elis still controls the Labs. Grothor still runs Dragon Logistics. Leonore still has Al’ar backing. The election determined official authority, but power in Chrysalis is more complicated than a single office.

Connecting to Broader Campaign

Chrysalis serves as the political and intellectual heart of the Terra campaign:

  • The Oripathy Crisis radiates from here into every settlement
  • The Ancient Technology Race involves all major factions with Chrysalis Labs at the center
  • The Horizon Arc Project threatens to destabilize the entire island
  • The RALA Alliance uses Chrysalis as neutral ground while plotting surface control

Characters who begin in Chrysalis will naturally be drawn toward:

  • Malachite (industrial source, Dwargon Malachite’s story, Facility 28)
  • Morain (agricultural community, goliath connections, Grothor’s family)
  • The Highland Plateau (silver man, geometric portal, Horizon Arc construction)
  • The Underdark (Al’ar territory, tunnel networks, ancient ruins)
  • Rhine Lab (rival institution, Guardian Project, Kristen Wright’s ambitions)

The threads all connect. Pull one and the others move. Every faction has secrets. Every secret has consequences. Every choice the characters make will ripple through Terra’s future.

Welcome to Chrysalis—the city that believes in progress, hides its costs, and stands on the edge of either breakthrough or catastrophe. What happens next depends on who your characters trust, what they’re willing to sacrifice, and whether they believe Terra’s civilization can avoid the fate of those who came before.
