The True Mechanism

Player characters affected by the Pattern-Echoes phenomenon are not, strictly speaking, continuous individuals in the way NPCs are. They are preserved information patterns — echoes of people the old civilization’s Sarcophagus network attempted (and largely failed) to save.

When the Sarcophagus facilities malfunctioned (see Facility 59 and the Portal Network), the people inside were not simply killed. Their data — memory, personality, the whole pattern of who they were — was captured and held in an inert, dormant state within the Sarcophagus system rather than destroyed outright. For roughly a thousand years, nothing retrieved them. Nothing could.

That changed, unintentionally, with Facility 31 and the Horizon Arc Project. Kristen Wright’s siphoning of Facility 31’s power for the Vivarium Lab and H.A.M.H.R.R. array is drawing on the same substrate that holds these dormant patterns. As a side effect nobody currently understands — least of all Kristen — some of that stored information is being intermittently, imperfectly pulled back into active manifestation: given a temporary body, temporary presence, temporary agency. Then, when the draw lapses or shifts elsewhere, that manifestation reverts to inert data until called again.

This is not a tool anyone currently possesses on purpose. No one in the current timeline has built a device to deliberately summon a specific pattern. What the party experiences as “coming and going” is an accidental, unrefined byproduct of industrial-scale energy extraction from a facility that was never designed to be drained this way. The eventual invention of an actual retrieval tool is future material — a possible payoff for Act 3 or beyond, once Kristen’s work (or someone reverse-engineering it) matures into deliberate control.

Why This Fits

  • Explains rotating party composition across all three storylines (surface party, deep-delve group, Gauntlet groups) as facets of the same underlying phenomenon, discovered at different depths/facilities without requiring the DM to unify the plots outright.
  • Gives the party’s shared logbook a diegetic function beyond convenience: manifestations don’t carry continuous memory the way a living person would, so the book is functionally how a pattern “remembers” what it didn’t personally experience.
  • Creates a natural, already-seeded villain-adjacent thread: Kristen Wright is causing this without knowing it (or without having reckoned with it — consistent with her established characterization). Saria’s suspicion of Kristen’s methods (see Kristen Wright DM Notes) can eventually extend to this.
  • Titania’s poisoning is a candidate for tying in further: if Titania discovered the Horizon Arc Project’s true nature at its testing grounds, she may also have discovered this — which raises the stakes of who silenced her and why.

Reveal Pacing

Do not reveal this to players immediately. The player-facing page documents only the mechanical/practical layer (logbook, in-and-out attendance, folk theories) and the false-but-plausible “Titania tests her champions” explanation. Suggested reveal hooks, to use whenever the DM is ready:

  • A character investigates Facility 31 directly and finds Sarcophagus data logs referencing “recovered fragments” or “non-original occupants.”
  • Kristen’s private research notes (if the party ever gains access) mention unexplained energy/information bleed she hasn’t reported to Saria or the Al’ar.
  • Titania, if approached in a moment of trust, may hint she knows exactly what the party is — without confirming it outright, consistent with her guardian-of-secrets role.
  • A returning “echo” experiences a discontinuity too large for the logbook to paper over — skipped time, a detail nobody wrote down, a name they shouldn’t know.

Open Questions / Flag for Later

  • Does the current party know each other are affected, or does each character believe they are the anomaly and the others are ordinary? (Recommend deciding this before the next session where composition changes.)
  • Is there a hard limit on how many patterns can manifest at once, tied to Facility 31’s draw capacity? Could create scarcity/tension if the “cast” ever needs to be capped.
  • Whether the eventual deliberate retrieval tool (Arknights Endfield-style) becomes a party goal, a villain’s goal, or both.
