Quest Content
There has been no deliveries in the past month from Iris hamlet that lies tucked into the Cinderwoods. They grow herbs and medicinal plants that only grows in the forest there.
I am worried something has happened to the people living there.
Go and contact the nearest outpost to the hamlet, it lies to the edge of the forest. The wood elf Darryl should be on the lookout there, He will guide you to the hamlet.
There will be a lucrative reward of 100g each for you if you can come back with a report on the hamlet’s state for me. Oscar Iris
Hooks:
- The Iris Tavern’s proprietor Oscar Iris is personally invested — the hamlet is connected to his family. His brother William Iris was sent there to prove he could govern a small settlement
- Characters looking for medicinal herbs or alchemical ingredients have a practical reason to care whether the hamlet’s supply chain is restored
- Faer (if present) has a connection to Savras — the hamlet contains a holy symbol of Savras and a mirror of Savras, making this personally significant
- Darryl at the outpost has recently sighted a strange, thin dark humanoid creature near the hamlet — anyone curious about the undead or the Apathy will want to investigate
- After the party returns to Phandalin, they’ll find the central part of town partially covered in ice and a caravan torn open — a dragon attacked the drow’s caravan while they were gone, raising the stakes
Starting Point:
The Iris Tavern in Malachite (Old District). Oscar Iris or the current manager commissions the party. They should head to the hunter’s outpost at the edge of the Cinderwoods, where Darryl is stationed — tired and unsettled after sighting something in the dark. He guides the party to the hamlet from there.
DM-Notes:
The hamlet consists of four large buildings and a shed: a white main house (two floors, owners Mr and Ms Iris dead inside), a green house (holy symbol of Savras, keys to the workshop, cellar connected to the water system), a blue house (alchemist’s supplies, herbalism kits, tinker’s tools, unknown potions and a cheaper Potion of Vitality recipe), and a red barn (empty of animals, farming equipment).
The Apathy creature that caused the hamlet’s decline is in the cellar tunnels — DC 16 Investigation to find it. A second group of Apathy entered the hamlet in a herd; they were attracted by noise. The Apathy affects the emotional state of everyone nearby (lethargy, emotional suppression).
The Mirror of Savras is in the green house — a wondrous item embellished with symbols of Savras and Mystra. DC 12 Investigation, Religion, or Arcana to identify it. Oscar Iris wants this mirror back.
Potion shelf in the blue house may contain: healing, watchful rest, climbing, comprehension, philter of love, greater healing. DC 16 Investigation reveals the Potion of Vitality recipe using foxglove and irises.
Key NPC: William Iris (elder brother of Oscar) was the hamlet’s de facto governor. His fate is connected to the Apathy and the diary found in the main house. The diary traces the hamlet’s decline across six chapters and can be found with a DC 12 Investigation check.
