West Terra’s smuggling roads, running through to the East
A road out, if you’re willing to owe someone for it.
Overview
The Silver Syndicate started as exactly what the underworld still believes it is: a smuggling operation moving people who don’t fit — criminals, debtors, drow and half-drow born into the wrong family, anyone the surface has already decided it doesn’t want — out of West Terra and east, to wherever starting over is easier to manage. Kidnapping-for-hire, forged papers, unlawful border crossings: the trade is real, and the Syndicate still runs it.
What’s changed is who’s underneath it. The Silver Hand found the Syndicate’s routes, contacts, and recruits already doing most of what an off-the-books redemption arm needs done, and quietly moved to protect and direct them rather than shut them down. The people the Syndicate moves now sometimes pay in coin and sometimes in service — a debt worked off running routes that double as strikes against Lolth’s reach, moving a drow defector to safety, or making someone a cult would otherwise claim disappear somewhere safer instead.
Current Speaker: Morrigan Fallward
Location: A safehouse network strung along the West-to-East smuggling corridor. Western terminus presumed near Malachite or Chrysalis City — not yet fixed.
Public Projects: None. The smuggling operation is the only face the Syndicate has, and it isn’t advertising who’s really behind it.
Branches
- Finders — recruiters working the courts, prisons, and slums the Silver Hand’s justiciars pass through
- Runners — the smuggling chain itself, moving people and cargo west to east
- Threads — small, deniable cells doing the anti-Lolth work too dirty for a knight in silver to be seen doing
Key People
- Morrigan Fallward — Found the Syndicate’s existing smuggling routes and contacts while climbing the ranks of The Silver Hand, and began funding and directing it as the Hand’s off-books redemption arm. Still oversees its day-to-day activities.
- Arioch — from a respected drow family, left drow society over the pressure of being a man in a matriarch-dominated world.
Projects
- The West–East Corridor — the original smuggling route, still the Syndicate’s core business and its cover.
- Quiet Extractions — moving drow defectors, cult survivors, and others Lolth’s reach would otherwise claim, off the books.
- Working It Off — an internal system of debts paid in service rather than coin, for members recruited straight out of a Silver Hand sentencing.
Reputation
Among the underworld: a known, if dangerous, way out — you pay, or you owe, and either way you disappear and reappear somewhere else. Nobody moving through those circles connects the Syndicate to Tyr’s knighthood; that’s the entire point. Within the Silver Hand itself, the arrangement is reportedly controversial — some knights consider it necessary, others consider it a compromise their vow shouldn’t allow.
Background
The Syndicate predates its connection to the Silver Hand — it began as ordinary people-smuggling, born out of West Terra’s crime and its steady supply of people with nowhere else to go. It never had a single founder or leader in those early days; its members simply came together over what they had in common — not quite fitting into surface society — and built the smuggling trade out of that shared circumstance rather than anyone’s design. It was Morrigan Fallward, climbing the Silver Hand’s ranks on her own feats of courage, who later found the operation and quietly brought it under the order’s protection and direction rather than see it shut down.
