Description
Lolth is a demanding mistress, and what she demands most is sacrifice — of treasure, and of blood. Her lightless temples are places of ritual killing, their altars piled with skulls picked clean by the giant spiders that nest overhead. In return for adoration and victims, she grants signs of favour: an enemy struck down by sudden illness, unexpected success in a raid, an heir born under favourable omens.
Personality
Lolth is cold in a way that has nothing to do with temperature — a stillness that settles over anyone in her presence, the kind of cold that comes from something ancient having decided you don’t matter yet. She rules through absolute fealty; doubt is not tolerated, and questioning her is treated less as disagreement than as a kind of self-inflicted wound. Outsiders call her rule cruel, even mad — her demands rarely explain themselves, and she never bothers to justify them twice. But her followers who hold the line without flinching tend, disturbingly often, to prosper. Whether that’s her favor or simply what’s left after the ones who hesitated are gone, she’s never said, and no one still living has thought it wise to ask.
Influence on Terra
Lolth functions as the pantheon’s divine antagonist — a catalyst for ambition, betrayal, and the kind of ruthless self-interest that drives conflict rather than resolves it. Where Boldrei binds communities together, Lolth exists to pull them apart from within. Her presence in the Grand Pantheon isn’t one of comfort or petition so much as caution — a god whose favour is real, but never free.
Myth
Lolth did not come to the surface when civilization first took root on Terra. She didn’t need to. From below, she watched Boldrei, Tyr, Thrym, and Asmodeus tangle with each other over mortals who hadn’t yet learned to be afraid of any of them, and she found the whole display faintly amusing — gods bruising themselves over people who would all end up hers eventually, one way or another.
She surfaced only once, and only for craft. She came to Hephaestus’ forge carrying a working of her own weave — a design capable of turning aside the volcano’s own heat, and, she suspected, capable of far more than that if finished right. What she lacked was the final hand of a blacksmith to set it. Hephaestus obliged her, as he obliges most who come to him honestly wanting good work done, and the armor that came off his anvil did more than shield its wearer from Titania’s heat — it learned to swallow heat entirely, spun into a darkness so complete it was said to smother even sunlight. Whether that finished piece still exists, and in whose hands, is not recorded.
Every attempt she made to root herself further on the surface, Tyr met personally. He never let her plans mature the way Asmodeus’s were left to — Tyr confronted her directly, every time, and every time her footing above ground was cut away before it could take hold. It became, over the long years before the eruption, less a rivalry than a routine: Lolth reaching, Tyr answering.
When Titania finally broke and buried the old civilization, Lolth did not need to fight for anything. She only needed to wait. Her domain has been creeping upward through the tunnels and ruins ever since, patient the way only something with no use for centuries can be patient, closing slowly over everything the eruption left behind. The one thing that still slows her advance is not a god’s confrontation but a god’s leftovers — Boldrei’s old protections, worked into hearths and doorframes long before the eruption, still linger in the buried ruins, and her followers find those old thresholds harder to cross than they’d like to admit.
“The only real difference between an ally and an enemy is that one deserves a quick death.”
