Town Malachite

The industrial heart of Terra — heavy machinery, ore smelting, and the forges that turned a modest port into the island’s manufacturing power, now straining under the weight of its own success.

Overview

Malachite Forges is the organisation with the facilities and capabilities to mass-produce metals and ore at scale, headquartered in Town Malachite’s Copper Ward. If there is heavy-duty work to be done anywhere on Terra, Malachite Forges has the equipment for it — cranes, transport vehicles, excavation gear, and smelting facilities running day and night. The integration of originium into its processes over the past two decades dramatically increased production capacity, cementing Malachite’s status as Terra’s industrial centre.

That same integration has made the Forges the focal point of growing public anxiety. As oripathy cases spread through the dwarven population, and black smoke continues to pour from the forges, critics increasingly question whether the Forges’ processes are as safe as the organisation insists. Malachite Forges maintains that oripathy is a mining hazard, not an industrial one — a position the Dwarves Union defends as fiercely as the Forges itself, treating attacks on Malachite’s craftsmanship as an attack on dwarven tradition more broadly.

Current Speaker: Dwargon Malachite, master smith — currently living with advanced (Stage 3–4) oripathy.

Location: Copper Ward, Town Malachite.

Public Projects: Ore smelting and refinement, heavy machinery rental and operation, custom and industrial metalwork.

Branches

No formal internal branch structure is documented in the vault. Operations are centred on the Copper Ward smelting and forge facilities, with mining operations extending into the surrounding tunnels and depths.

Key People

Projects

  • Originium-enhanced smelting techniques — Dwargon’s “secret techniques,” a closely guarded process whose succession (and safety) is an open plot thread.
  • Mining and excavation operations, currently halted due to tremors originating from the deep tunnels beneath Malachite.

Services

  • Heavy machinery rental: crane, transport vehicles (pickup truck), excavation equipment.
  • Driver’s licence for heavy machinery — 10gp, DC 15 test.
  • Ore smelting facility.
  • Custom and industrial metalwork.

Reputation

Malachite Forges is publicly associated with dwarven craftsmanship and Terra’s industrial backbone, but is increasingly on the defensive over its connection to the crystalline disease. The Dwarves Union treats criticism of the Forges as a slight against dwarven tradition itself, while voices in Chrysalis — including mayoral candidate Leonore of Alyss — argue that the Forges’ wealth and influence endanger ordinary citizens.

What the streets say

  • Dwargon Malachite is dying, black crystal eating him from the inside — the Forges will fall apart without him.
  • The Forges insist their processes are safe; that’s not what the smoke over Copper Ward suggests.
  • A six-year-old child begging by the river in Chrysalis has visible crystallisation on her skin, and anti-dwarf sentiment is rising in places that blame dwarven industrial methods for spreading it — sentiment that stays muted in Malachite itself, where dwarves hold institutional power.

Background

Malachite Forges grew out of Town Malachite’s transformation from a modest port into Terra’s industrial heart, a shift accelerated dramatically by the discovery of originium twenty years ago. What began as cautious experimentation with the black crystal became the foundation of the Forges’ — and the town’s — prosperity. Dwargon Malachite has led the organisation through this growth and continues to work his personal forge in Copper Ward despite his advancing condition, a large originium crystal (worked into a spike, a d12, and a sphere) displayed beside his workstation as both ornament and symbol.

Notes

  • Malachite Forges and the Dwarves Union share headquarters within Town Malachite and substantial membership overlap — Dwargon Malachite himself is affiliated with both factions. Worth deciding whether these should cross-reference more explicitly on both pages.
  • Mining operations are currently halted due to tremors linked to activity near or within the Sarcophagus facilities beneath Malachite (see Town Malachite Echoes from the Deep Dark) — a live connective thread to the Dwarves Union’s quest and the wider Rhine Lab storyline.
  • The Al’ar family has been quietly mapping the tunnels beneath Malachite, nominally for Dragon Logistics — a thread relevant to the Forges’ halted operations that the Forges themselves are not aware of.
