Overview
Rhine Lab is a research institute and scientific consortium drawing personnel from across Terra, active in the fields of originium, biology, and energy. It styles itself as Chrysalis Labs’ rival and intellectual equal — and in many respects has earned that comparison — but its reputation is marred by rumors of unethical, inhumane experimentation that Chrysalis Labs publicly distances itself from while privately envying some of its results.
The institute was founded fifteen years ago by two Chrysalis University graduates, Kristen Wright and Saria the Vouivre, who split from Chrysalis Labs to pursue research without the same institutional oversight. The split strained relationships with their alma mater but also validated Chrysalis’s educational model — proof that the city could train researchers capable of founding rival institutions.

Location: South of Port Town Malachite. The campus combines surrounding nature with the building itself, and the roads around it are built for autonomous loaders — transport based on old warforged technology that some researchers privately suspect may be sentient.

The Research Campus
A grand building that deliberately combines surrounding nature with its architecture — a contrast to Chrysalis Labs’ more clinical campus. Surrounding roads are built for autonomous loaders based on old warforged technology; officially these are not sentient, though some researchers privately disagree.
Vivarium Lab
A laboratory built aboard the Horizon Arc vessel itself, powered directly by a Sarcophagus. Its existence is one of the clearest signs that the “Pioneer Project” is not simply an exploration vessel — Sarcophagus-grade power output is wildly disproportionate to anything a conventional spacecraft would need.
Facility 31
One of the old civilization’s Sarcophagus installations, buried roughly 800ft beneath Rhine Labs itself. Worn-out metal walls but a structure still standing — power units are still outputting energy, though a malfunction killed everyone who was sleeping inside. Public Reputation
Rhine Lab presents itself as a research institute dedicated to scientific advancement, openly publishing much of its work — in contrast to Chrysalis Labs’ more guarded posture on oripathy research. It has publicly announced “promising treatment vectors” for oripathy that it claims Chrysalis Labs’ institutional caution prevents that organization from pursuing, a claim that is as much a political jab as a scientific one.
Beneath the public-facing openness, persistent rumors allege unethical, inhumane human experimentation. Chrysalis Labs distances itself from these rumors publicly while privately acknowledging some of Rhine Lab’s breakthroughs — particularly in originium energy applications — are genuinely impressive.

Background
Founding
Fifteen years ago, two Chrysalis University graduates — Saria the Vouivre and Kristen Wright — left Chrysalis Labs to found an institution dedicated solely to scientific advancement, unconstrained by Chrysalis’s more measured, oversight-heavy approach. The split was officially amicable. Unofficially, it represented a rejection of institutional caution in favor of speed.
Originium and the Crisis
Rhine Lab is active in originium research and is pursuing more aggressive experimentation than Chrysalis Labs is willing to publicly attempt. The institute is one of the factions implicated — alongside Malachite Forges, Chrysalis Labs, and the Dwarves Union — in the broader oripathy crisis unfolding across Terra (see Flesh to Dust Incident, Originium).
The Pivot to the Sky
At some point in the last several years, Kristen Wright’s research ambitions outgrew originium and oripathy entirely. Through channels Saria did not fully sanction, Kristen began collaborating with the Al’ar family on what would become the Horizon Arc Project — using Rhine Lab’s resources, its Guardian Project research into survivable biological enhancement, and its access to Sarcophagus technology, all in service of a goal she has not been fully transparent about even with her own co-founder.
